Aidan Gets a Gold and a Bronze.Written by: Nigel
U 15 Wiltshire Bronze 22 Oct 2011 - double gold for Avon
Avon had five boys playing in the Wiltshire Bronze, and with forty seven other boys from around the South and South West, there were plenty of good players in the entry. Will Robinson, Ed Burnham, Justin Hayden, Jono Sutton and Aidan Gibbons were there bright and early hoping for some success. For most of the boys it was quite a challenging day, with Will, Ed and Justin each winning one singles match in their boxes, and Ed and Will taking one in their double box. It’s always very difficult coming into tournaments, battling away, and not having much success, or even any success. However, it’s part of the learning process for county players, getting out there and learning how to win, how to take matches that are getting close, but it’s not always a comfortable experience. I was proud with how each of the boys played, trying hard and keeping going. By plugging away players improve and I’m sure that these four can do so.
Aidan was only playing in his second tournament of the season, having pulled a muscle in the first one. However, he was now ready to go again, and made brief work of his opponents in his box, with the most anyone got against him being 11 points. Into the knock out stages and his first three matches were won, 21 -15, 21 – 13, 21 – 14. Which led to a final against Liam Sillifant from Cornwall. Aidan and Liam had played each other recently in a county match, which went to three with Aidan winning. Playing only one meant he had to concentrate and play at his best throughout. Aidan led from the beginning and never let that lead slip, although at 20 – 16, Liam began to edge back before Aidan finally won 21 – 19.
In the doubles Aidan was playing with Devon’s William Fryer as a scratch pair. They played well together, winning their group, and going onto to take the semi-final against Luke Bailey (Ke) and Matthew Bick (Co) 21 – 17. In the final they took on the Herts pair of Rishis Choudhury and Duncan Williams. It was a good match, and Aidan and Will kept up their momentum to take the game 21 – 15.
A double gold for Aidan and automatic upgrading to a grade 2. Well done on such a dominant performance.
