Avon U 15's qualified in second place in group A to Warwickshire, it meant that when the draw was made at 9.45 a.m. before the tournament started, the team were going to face one of the winning teams, other than Warwickshire.
This meant either Cheshire, Hampshire or Norfolk. The draw favoured Avon, as we drew Norfolk, a team we thought we could beat.
The first round match against Norfolk was highly charged for the team, as winning it would take the team into the top half of the draw for the next round and a guaranteed top four finish. It started well with three wins out of four in the mixed doubles, followed by a clean sweep in the boys singles, and splitting the girls singles. In the final level doubles rounds Avon only dropped one game. It was a brilliant team performance, and meant they'd won 15 - 5.. There were some extremely good performances, with Saskia and Jess winning both their level doubles, and Kieran and Brendan beating the number one boys pair, 21 - 20. Michael had a very good singles win, 21 - 5, Dennis
and Henley a great doubles win, 21 - 4, Anna and Bex a good doubles win, 21 - 18. Brendan and Olivia won their mixed comfortably 21 - 6. So all in all some excellent performances to give us a very solid victory.
Second round and another draw, this time Warwickshire. The team had beaten them in the group stage, and Warwickshire were out for revenge. They got it by beating us 15 - 5. However, Jess played a spectacular singles against Becci Crawshaw, winning 21 - 17, Michael won a great singles match against Matt Close 21 - 20, and Kieran beat Rob Spink 21 - 16.
Whilst those were three of the wins, the rest of the matches were all played in a tremendously
competitive spirit, Henley took on number 1 Rhys Walker and Dennis played a good game against Sam Parsons, and Henley and Dennis took their level doubles against Rob Spink and Michael Brazier very close, only narrowly loosing 20 -21.
The third round was for the third/fourth place, and it was against Buckinghamshire. Dennis and Bex narrowly lost 20 -21, Kieran and Jess narrowly won, 21 - 20, Dennis and Michael took a tremendous win against the
number one boys, 21 - 20, and then narrowly lost to the number two boys, 20 -21. Tight games. Brendan and Olivia had a great win 21 - 16, and Jess and Saskia took the second girls game, 21 - 19. In the end Bucks won more of the close games than we did, and they came out winners, 14 - 6.
Everyone played extremely well, putting huge amounts of energy into each match, and they played very competitively at a high level against some of the best players around. Coming fourth was a fantastic achievement, and each of them deserves to be praised. They'll have to wait until the AGM to get their qualifiers medals, but they have earned them.

We came to Babington College, Leicestershire, on a beautiful summer Spring Bank holiday for the last of the Shires League finals for this year and the last one to be held at Babington. All finals next year will be held at Hertfordshire Sports Village, Hatfield.
Shires League Finals have been held at Babington since 2003 and in all that time Yorkshire have been invited to every final, except today’s! You have to admit though that invites to 20 out of 21 finals is pretty impressive.
The draw took place at 9:45am. Avon was more than happy with the draw, going on to beat Norfolk quite comfortably 15-5. Warwickshire and Cheshire both won their first round matches soundly, but the match between Hampshire and Buckinghamshire was very close. At 8-8, there was only 7 points in the match. In the end Buckinghamshire won 11-9, which allowed the runners up from two groups to go through to the top 4 teams.
In the second round Warwickshire was drawn to play Avon, whilst Cheshire was drawn to play Buckinghamshire, making for a final between the two clearly strongest teams here today of Warwickshire and Cheshire. There were no surprises.
Playing in positions 5th to 8th, Staffordshire was drawn to play Norfolk and Essex was drawn to play Hampshire. Staffordshire were clearly the stronger team and won their match 14-6. The match between Essex and Hampshire was very close and could have gone either way. In the end Essex won 11-9, but even then only by 7 points.
In the final Warwickshire were in no mood for defeat. Cheshire was taken aback by suddenly going down 4-0 in the mixed, when they thought that they would at least have taken 2 of the games. However, they fought back and gradually, regained to a commendable score of 12-8. All of the other matches were very close affairs.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team managers for their help and support in running the tournament and keeping everything running smoothly.
Finally, my congratulations once again go to all the players. Even after defeats, players pick themselves up and continue to be as competitive as ever. It never ceases to amaze me how hard teams strive to achieve their best and what wonderful sportsmanship is observed. This tournament always seemed to bring the best out of players and today was no exception; long may it continue.
