U11s play in PooleWritten by: Dave Foreman
U11’s Play in Poole 2.3.08
Dorset 23 – 13 Avon
Avon U11’s enjoy a great day out in Poole playing Dorset in our return match of the season. With a big thanks to Dorset and Mums on Mothers Day.
Team: Aidan Gibbons, Elliot Joyner, Luke Morgan, James Swift, Eddie Burnham, Megan Foreman, Kirby Ngan, Emily Walker, Sasha Adams, Caroline Higgins & Elise Cory.
Despite losing one of our boys on the morning of the match due to illness, which meant handing Dorset 5 games straight off, Avon played extremely well and pushed Dorset all the way. Even Margaret their Manager complimented the Avon players on the match and felt that it could have gone either way.
The boys started strongly as ever, with Aidan avenging his previous defeat to the Dorset No 1 Cameron Jones. Elliot did extremely well to win his match in 3 and James won in 2. Eddie playing for points hung in well once he started concentrating, and whilst Luke lost his match, he won as Fenton.
The girls had very strong competition, as Dorset have very strong girls. Whilst Caroline showed a lot of grit and determination to win in 3, the others all acquitted themselves well against powerful opposition. The strength of our girls showed in the doubles where the games were very close. Elise and Caroline played well against their much stronger opponents. Emily and Sasha won one match and pushed the Dorset No. 1 & 2 pairs very close. Kirby and Megan complimented one another well, both covering for each other. They won 2 of their matches and were unlucky against the No. 1 pair losing 23-25, 18-21.
The boys won their doubles 5-4, even with handing Dorset 3 of them. Aidan and Elliot liked to keep everyone on the edge of their seats winning each match in 3. Luke and James came from a game down to beat their No.2 pairing in 3. They narrowly lost to the No. 1 pair and beat the No. 3’s. Eddie had some great matches playing with 3 different partners, winning one in 3.
The mixed doubles were again very tight, but the close calls seem to go Dorset’s way at the end. Eddie and Elise, James and Caroline, Elliot and Kirby all had very good matches and were unlucky not to get more from them. Emily and Luke, James and Sasha were all very close fought and lost in 3. The match of the day was Aidan and Megan playing the Dorset No. 1,s. They complimented one another well, and played well thought out controlled badminton to win 21-19, 22-20.
Well played by all, especially the Parents and Supporters as always. It was also good to see the way everyone behaved and controlled themselves in the inevitable controversial situations that do arise in competitive Badminton.
