U 13 Avon Invitation Doubles

24 Jan 2010, St Ursula’s, Bristol

The drip drip effect

Today’s U 13 Avon Invitation Doubles went well, except for one small problem, condensation. Two of the courts suffered from condensation problems for much of the day, one of them was so severe it had to be closed down for play from about lunchtime. That meant completing the tournament on three courts, however it was better than risking an injury. One boy had already taken a tumble during a warm up, slipping on a drip that no one had noticed, and so that was that, close the court. Better to play a little longer than risk injury.

The girls tournament produced semi finals between Dorset and Surrey, and Avon and Surrey. The Dorset/Surrey match between Charlotte Murray and Hannah Turner needed an umpire as the passions began to rise, however, in the end Surrey won 21 – 15. The Avon/Surrey match was even closer, with Samodani Wijetunge and Claire Mills beating the home pair of Kirby Ngan and Megan Foreman, 22 – 20. It was impressive seeing both Surrey pairs in the final, and in the end it was a victory for Samodani Wijetunge and Claire Mills, 21 – 9.

The boys tournament also put two Surey pairs into the semi finals, however, this time it was Surrey/Surrey and Oliver Thompson and Thomas Saunders beat Luke Pearce and Shalien Patel, 21 – 14. The second semi final was an all Wales affair, with Tsung Fong Mo and Matthew Pritchard beating James Ellaway and Tomas Whiteman, 21 – 8. That led to a cracking final, where the Welsh pair narrowly defeated the Surrey pair, 21 – 18.

A good days play with some great matches throughout the day. Thanks to all the parents who sat in what was a very cold hall without complaint (at least no complaining to me) and with good humour. Thanks particularly to John who manned the desk, Di and Cath who worked as runners, and David (from Dorset) who stepped in to help as a runner when Cath had to go. Also thanks to Veneus and Ian for the tea, and all the others who contributed over both days in whatever way.

I needed a good hard run after two days of running this, which was good in the chill of the Bristol evening. Hopefully all those who put effort in, and the parents who did all the driving and supporting, also got a chance to relax.

I hope that all who took part enjoyed themselves, and congratulations to all the winners.
