U13s SW restricted

Written by: Jane Hopton

It was great to see eight Avon u13s entering the south west restricted. Unfortunately having to wait 45 mins outside the now closed venue, whilst someone found the key and a sercurity pass was a little frustrating. But it did give Brendan time to collect some kit together having left his in Bristol (have you never heard of postit notes Dave you stick them on your door with reminders food!! rackets! shoes! ect), there's always a silver lining.

Once inside the competitors were raring to go, Aidan and Connor had some tough games in their boxes but played well showing what great sportsman they can be. Jack had some good games, playing some of his best singles this year. You should be very proud Jack. Peter won some hard fought games to come 2nd in his box, excellent Pete. Brendan with borrowed shoes and racket, won his box and went on to play a fantastic semi against Ben Mynors-Wallace (Do).  During an exciting rally a string went in Brendans racket, after a frantic search for a replacement, Ben went on to win the semi. Brendan fought very hard in difficult circumstances. Well done Brendan.

The boys doubles were equally exciting Conner and Aidan fought very hard in a tough box, winning some exciting rallies. A doubles partnership for the future? Brendan with his partner Daniel Chow De won their box comfortably. The 2nd boys box was so hotly contended that it became an equal tie between three pairs after a lot of discussion, nail biting and anxious waiting it was decided that the three pairs would have to play the box again. Three games to 21, a very tall order as all these boy were good, with many long rallies and some very close scores Peter and Jack won all three proving what an excellent doubles pair they can be.

Three Avon players in the final what an achievement. Jack and Peter battled hard againt the more experienced pairing of Daniel Chow (a grade 1 player) and Brendan. Dispite being up at 11 and some excellent rallies Jack and Peter couldn't quite finish it off. Well deserved Gold to Dan and Brendan, Silver to Jack and Peter. Well done boys.

The girls singles was hotly contested, with five grade 1 players the competition was tough. Anna and Saskia played well against  good opposistion Anna taking 12 off  a grade 1 player and Saskia taking 14 from another grade 1 player. Well done girls. Jess won her box quite comfotably going on to play, her friend and team Bath collegue, Nicole Gresty Gl, in the semi. The final was between Jess and another team Bath collegue Zoe Balfour Gl. In an excellent game with some very long rallies Jess managed to just edge ahead taking the game 21-15 Another Gold for Avon and a big cup to dust!!!

The girls doubles were played in one box Saskia and Anna continued their excellent doubles form this season to take some excellent wins including beating the Gloucestershire pair Nicloa Gresty and Faye Brewster, well done to them. Jess and her partner Kathryn Saywell So, played some great badminton working well as a pair to take the Gold (another cup to dust) Silver to Zoe and Charis Gl.
