U17 Southwest Shires Combo v SomersetWritten by: Jane
U17s Home vs Somerset 6.11.11 Shires League: won 12-8
South West League: lost 16-20
Team: Henley, Brendan, Peter, Luke, Matt, Dylan Anna, Sally, Saskia, Louise, Ellie, Marta
Our first home match against the increasingly talented Somerset team. Shortage of U17 boys, meant we were very grateful to Dylan who kindly helped us out. Henley was clearly not at full strength, showing great team commitment in playing today.
In singles, our top four boys dominated. Special mention to Luke who played a great game and battled through to win in the third end. The Somerset girls showed skill and depth to win 5 matches, with Louise building on her singles victory last week to take a single match for Avon.
In doubles, Henley and Brendan were pushed to 3 ends by the first pair. This only goes to emphasise the great determination and pluckiness of Matt and Dylan who took the second end from these boys – something to be very proud of. Pete and Luke gelled well today with straight wins over all 3 Somerset pairs.
For the girls it was a much greater challenge. Anna and Saskia disappointed to be just pipped by Kathryn and Alice 12-21, 23-21, 21-23. Marta and Ellie had a tough time against much more experienced opposition but kept trying and stayed cheerful as always. Ultimately only 2/9 matches claimed for Avon.
Lastly the mixed – knowing that we needed at least 2 of the top 4 games for a Shires victory. Pete and Sally took theirs comfortably, with Luke and Louise taking theirs in 3, closely followed by Brendan and Anna. Honours even 3-3 in mixed with a final result giving victory to Somerset in the South West league and Avon in the Shires.
Many thanks to Somerset for being such good sports throughout and, as ever, to all the parents for their support with catering, drinks and advice. Especially appreciated were Vee’s delicious toasties....just the thing for a cold sports hall and an opportunity to add to the funds for ICTJ
