U17s V Devon Shires and South West Combination

Written by:

U17s away against Devon 23.10.11

Shires League: lost 7-13

South West League: lost 9-27

Team: Henley, Brendan, Peter, Luke, Hugh, Matt.

Anna, Kirby, Sally, Saskia, Louise, Sarah.

First match of the season for the U17s - all of the team played with great enthusiasm and determination, never giving up even when faced with an uphill task. Devon are always tough opposition and today they definitely had the edge if you look at the overall score. But behind that score-line so many of the games were really close. Of the 9 games that went to 3 ends, we were perhaps unlucky to only win 1 and so many ends went to setting or were lost to 18 or 19. In analysing the Shires league data, only 33 points separated the teams although this translated to a difference of 11 rubbers and 6 matches.

Well deserved and fought for singles victories for Pete, Luke, Kirby and Saskia. In doubles the Devon boys showed their tremendous depth by taking all 9 rubbers. The girls fared better with Anna and Kirby winning all of their games and Sally and Saskia beating the 3rd pair. In mixed, only Brendan and Anna secured a win.

Many thanks to our hosts for their hospitality, to the many parents who came to support and to Sandra, Lynne, Tracey and Gordon who helped with advice during the match.
