U17s vs Cornwall Combo

Written by: Jane

U17s vs Cornwall at home

Shires League:   Won 17-3

South West League:       Won 25-11

Team:   Brendan, Peter, Hugh, Matt, James, Dylan

Jess, Anna, Kirby, Sally, Saskia, Louise

The first outing for the new squad shirts! We were able to field our strongest girls’ team as Jess was available, but our boys were not at full strength so the outcome of this match was never a certainty.

Enormous thanks to both James and Dylan for playing up an age group and remaining focussed and cheerful throughout the match.

In singles, Brendan played a fantastic game to beat Cornwall’s top boy, Kris Jasper, in 2 ends. Pete dispatched his opponent with relative ease and Hugh had a nail-biting 3-setter but just squeezed through 21-19. Honours were even as the tables were turned for Matt with the opposite result – some excellent play by both boys. The girls dominated the score line, only conceding 1 match as Louise was forced to retire in the 3rd end.

A wonderful clean sweep for the girls who took all 9 of their matches. Kirby and Saskia, Sally and Louise all showing real determination to fight back even when forced to 3 ends. The boys had a tougher time – testimony to Cornwall’s dogged determination to build their team in the last few years. Special mention to Matt and Hugh at second pair who beat their matched opponents – 24-22 in the second end.

Finally the mixed doubles: again credit to Cornwall for pushing Pete and Jess to 3 ends and a well-deserved victory for James and Saskia, to give us 4 of the 6 matches.

Many thanks to Cornwall for being such sporting opponents, and to all the parents for their support and encouragement.
