U17s vs Dorset Combo

Written by: Jane

U17s vs Dorset at home

Shires League:   Won 14-6

South West League:       Won 27-9

Team:   Brendan, Peter, Aidan, Luke, Hugh, Matt

Jess, Anna, Kirby, Sally, Saskia, Louise

The prospect of playing Dorset without Henley was enough to make us feel rather nervous. Fortunately Aidan was able to play up and we were once again able to field our best girls’ team. Dorset weren’t able to bring their strongest girls so we thought we may be in with a chance.

Jess set the tone for the girls and everyone followed suit with all the girls winning convincingly in 2 ends. The Dorset boys have quality and depth which was ably demonstrated. Brendan had an epic match against the very experienced gold star player, Rory, losing in the 3rd but a huge test of character – most impressive.  Credit to Pete and Hugh for winning their singles; Matt showed great tenacity and was so narrowly beaten 19-21 in his 3rd end.

Level doubles saw Pete and Luke win all 3 of their matches, others had mixed fortunes, but Avon took 5/9 of the boys. Our girls stayed focussed and confident to take 8/9 matches.

In mixed, the whole team played with skill and determination to take all six matches. A tremendous win for the U17s which, maybe albeit briefly, places them 5th in the Shires League table.

Many thanks to the Dorset team and manager for being sporting opponents and to the Avon parents for providing such a feast.
